What counts as oily wastewater
Water with petroleum in it, as long as it's non-hazardous. If it came off a floor, out of a trap, or out of a tank that took on water, it probably qualifies.
- Water-contaminated storage tanks. A tank that took on water still holds recoverable petroleum. We collect the whole stream.
- Industrial wastewater. Process water with petroleum in it, from plants and industrial sites.
- Drain trap liquids. What accumulates in the trap, pumped out and taken away.
- Mop water. Yes, plain mop water from shop floors qualifies. It carries oil, and it should not go down the drain.
- Recovered, then recycled. We remove the recoverable petroleum from the stream and recycle the non-hazardous oily wastewater, with disposal following environmental procedures at the appropriate facilities.

The fix is habit, not equipment: keep chlorinated products away from the drains, traps and tanks that feed your oily water and used oil. If a stream has already been contaminated, our Hazardous & Special Waste Division manages it properly.

Is oily wastewater hazardous waste?
Not normally. The streams we collect on this page are non-hazardous. The exception is contamination: chlorinated cleaners or solvents in the stream can make it regulated hazardous waste, which our Hazardous & Special Waste Division then handles.
What happens to it after collection?
The recoverable petroleum is removed from the stream, the non-hazardous oily wastewater is recycled, and disposal follows environmental procedures at the appropriate facilities.
