A $60 million plant, built for used oil
UES completed construction of its used oil re-refinery in Peachtree City, Ga., in 2013. The $60 million investment processes 90 million gallons of used oil a year, using technology patented by Avista Oil, and created jobs for the local community.
UES is part of Avista Oil, which runs three more re-refineries: Saudi Arabia since 2003, Germany since 2005, and Denmark since 2008, all running at full capacity. The About page has the rest of the company story.
What happens to the oil

Contaminants that would be released if used oil were simply burned are captured instead and recycled into an asphalt compound.
Used oil can be re-refined again and again without losing the qualities that make base oil work, so the same oil can keep coming back as new lubricant.
Why re-refining matters
Re-refining base oil from used oil takes 50 to 85 percent less energy than refining it from crude, according to a United States Department of Energy study. It's written as a range because that is how the study reports it.
The same study's program estimates that converting used oil into recycled base oil can save 63 million gallons of fuel a year. And because used oil keeps its base oil qualities, re-refining needs no new non-renewable resources to keep the cycle going.
