Built in 2013 to re-refine used oil
UES completed the Peachtree City re-refinery in 2013 after a $60 million investment in the facility.
The plant processes 90 million gallons of used oil a year using re-refining technology developed by Avista Oil.
UES is part of Avista Oil, which also operates re-refineries in Germany and Denmark.
What happens to the oil
Used oil collected on UES routes is brought to the Peachtree City plant for processing.
Oil that is suitable for re-refining goes through a series of treatment and separation steps that remove water, fuel, additives and other contaminants. What remains is recovered base oil that can be used again to make lubricants.
Oil that cannot be re-refined may be used as industrial fuel. Contaminants removed during processing are captured, and some go into asphalt products.
Because base oil does not wear out, used lubricating oil can be re-refined more than once.
Re-refining recovers oil that can be used again
Used lubricating oil still contains valuable base oil. Re-refining separates that base oil from water, fuel, additives and other contaminants so it can return to use in new lubricants.
The U.S. EPA has estimated that re-refining used oil requires about one-third the energy needed to refine crude oil to lubricant quality.
A 2020 U.S. Department of Energy report to Congress also cites life-cycle studies finding substantially lower energy and environmental impacts from re-refining compared with producing base oil from crude.
